Ramadan campaigns are the laziest idea in Gulf marketing

An occasion strategy that starts and ends with Ramadan and Eid is not a strategy. It is a calendar reminder.

Open any brand's social feed in the Gulf during Ramadan and you will see the same four seconds of footage: a lantern, a long table, a family reunited at iftar. It has been the same ad for a decade, made by a different agency each year, for a different client, saying nothing new.

This is not activation. It is a tax brands pay to be seen participating. And the spend behind it is enormous: UAE Ramadan retail spend was estimated at close to $10 billion in 2025, while Saudi Arabia's 2026 season is tracking toward 65 billion riyals, roughly $17.3 billion, a 12% rise year on year. That much money chasing the same four seconds of lantern footage is not a creative failure. It is a targeting failure.

The same research shows real behaviour is far more granular than the headline occasion suggests. Movement data across the Gulf finds that more than 48% of daily movement during Ramadan happens after iftar, against 18 to 22% on an ordinary day, and e-commerce activity rises 30 to 50% above baseline through the month. These are specific, mappable moments, the post-iftar delivery surge, the pre-dawn suhoor window, that most brand calendars never plan around because they are too busy producing the same lantern spot.

Finding those ordinary moments is a mapping exercise, not a guess. Plotting the specific buying moments a brand must win, payday, the school run, a shift change, surfaces the occasions that actually drive volume, most of which never make it onto a campaign calendar built around the two headline weeks of the year.

An occasion strategy that starts and ends with Ramadan and Eid is not a strategy. It is a calendar reminder.
